The Ten Tors event takes place every year on Dartmoor. It is open to young people aged 14-19 and is organised by the army. It attracts teams from schools, Scouts, cadets and other youth groups from all over the South West. Completing Ten Tors is a major achievement for any young person. It consists of a 2 day hike (of 35, 45 or 55 miles) over Dartmoor.

The challenge is open to teams of 6, and teams have the option of competing in the categories as follows:
        35 miles : 14-15 year olds
        45 miles : 16-17 year olds
        55 miles : 17-19 year olds

Each team is issued with a list of Tors on Dartmoor that they must walk to, and check in at. There are numerous different routes issued and the teams must navigate their own way. The terrain of Dartmoor is variable including boggy areas and other difficulties and this, and the weather, are part of the challenge! The team carries its own tents and stoves between the 6 members, and must look after themselves for the duration of the whole 2 days, camping at one of the manned Tors.

400 teams take part each year. The event itself starts the day before the race with scrutineering (all kit is checked over by the organisers) and issuing of the routes. The challenge then begins at 7am on the Saturday and the teams aim to make it back as early as they can on the Sunday - and before the gate closes at 5pm.

Taking part in Ten Tors is a fantastic opportunity that is strongly recommended. It does however require a certain commitment - to the training, to your personal fitness and to aquiring suitable equipment. When the teams we have been allocated are oversubscribed then we will be selecting participants on their ability, aptitude and level of commitment.
